The five VO65’s are on their way to Genova, Italy. We just received the update below from Team JAJO's OBR Brend Schuil.
Wednesday June 21st – 1200 UTC
We keep changing places with the Trifork/Mirpuri team. It's a battle for second and third place. After a few good strategic decisions by our navigator and skipper, we came out well this morning. With our direct competitor 2 nm behind us.
We continue South towards the Strait of Gibraltar and at Cascais we all of a sudden get great winds. Finally we see 20 knots +. This is were these boats are made for. We all enjoy it but unfortunately it's only for a short time, already soon we slow down again. Even completely windless.
Trifork/Mirpuri sees us lying and makes a jibe out to sea immediately. Trying to sail around the calm. We decide, more or less forces, to stay where we are and wait for a breath of wind from land. We see Trifork / Mirpuri sailing around us at speed while we lie still ourselves.
Max, our navigator, climbs into the mast and sees wind close to land. Slowly we drift towards it. Until we pick up the wind again and can finally sail away. This will happen more often.
We all try to keep our head cool and the boat going. The atmosphere on board is good but you also notice that despite the weather the intensity is very high. Their is a lot being asked of the sailors. Everyone just likes to put the pedal to the metal.
All onboard are doing well, including newcomers Mark and Megan. They fit well in the team. People are a little more nervous about the food. We won't starve, but soon not everything will be in stock anymore. So we'll have to be a little bit more careful because it doesn't look like we'll be Genova anytime soon.
