After a great goodbye in The Hague last Thursday, the five VO65s set course for Genoa, Italy in the final leg of The Ocean Race. This afternoon we received an update from Team JAJO's OBR Brend Schuil.
Monday June 19th 13:00 UTC
It weren't the most easiest days on board. Of course you prefer to sail downwind all the times with these boats, that's most smooth. But at the moment we're sailing upwind and we even have had a few complete standstills. Being placed in a wind whole we couldn't go anywhere.
Very frustrating, especially when you see a competitor only a mile away getting wind an sail away from you. At those moments everyone is disappointed, but we keep our head up and the motivation high. We all know the race is only over at the finish line.
Today Max, our navigator, came with the plan to catch more wind further out to sea. That worked out well, we're now again next to Trifork/Mirpuri. And according to our calculations even before them.
The general atmosphere on board is good. There is plenty of laughter next to the serious and focussed sailing. We all know performance is one and so we act.
We saw a lot of wildlife. Every day several dolphin groups and even a few whales.
On deck we mostly talk about everything we will encounter. Are we going up- or downwind through the Strait of Gibraltar? Will we encounter Orcas? How will the wind be like in the Med? But the focus is mainly on the now and to let the boat go as fast as possible.
Furthermore nothing special.
